Three tips to safer cycling this World Bicycle Day
Global estimates of bicycle production suggest that every two seconds, someone somewhere around the globe will buy a bike. If you're one of those people (or want to be) learn how to stay safe when cycling in South Africa with Team Vitality.
Did you know there are over a billion bicycles in use around the world?!
According to a popular cycling blog Bicycle Guider, China leads the bicycle ownership market by a large margin, followed by the United States, Japan and Germany. While we haven't quite cracked the Top 10 list, cycling is fast gaining popularity in South Africa as more people understand the many physical, mental and social benefits that cycling can offer them.
Curious about cycling, keen to get in on the action, but cautious about what it may entail? If that's you, here are three tips on how to enjoy the perks of cycling while being responsible.
Tip 1: Seek safety in numbers
No matter where you are outdoors or what activity you're doing (like running, hiking or cycling), it's always smart to have at least one partner - preferably a small group or team. This helps ensure there's someone on hand in case of an incident or injury. This is especially necessary if you're out while it's still a bit dark, or during longer weekend rides in the countryside.
Team Vitality topper: Joining a cycling club like ours ensures you always have dedicated, familiar people to train with. This keeps you accountable and fosters a wide and well organised network of support. Find fellow cyclists to ride with in person or online on Team Vitality's Zwift club, on Team Vitality's Facebook cycling group and Team Vitality's Strava cycling group.
Tip 2: Make sure people know where you are and how to help
There are many ways in which technology can help a close contact track your location and find essential information in case of an emergency. For example, if you have a Garmin fitness device, you can activate Find my location with Garmin Livetracking. You can also get something like an In Case of Emergency (ICE) identity bracelet, which saves all your emergency information on your wrist.
Team Vitality topper: Enjoy a 25% discount on an ICE ID Pro bracelet when you join Team Vitality.
Tip 3: Get the right gear for conditions on the road
Having the right safety gear is most important. Check that your bike is equipped with a strong, wide view light and a rear light to make you more visible when cycling in the dark. Try to always wear bright and reflective clothing, which helps motorists spot you from afar. When riding after bad weather, be extra cautious. Rain and storms can result in loose rubble, stones and sand scattered on the roads, which could make you skid.
Team Vitality topper: Discovery Pothole Patrol helps to keep the roads safe for both motorists and cyclists. In just the last year, they've fixed thousands of potholes in Johannesburg! Learn more about how you can get involved and report a pothole.
