Vitality MoveToGive has partnered with Book Dash to help young children from under-resourced communities discover the magical and liberating power of owning books. Studies have shown that being read to as a child and having access to books at home can have a measurable impact on child's early development, foundational literacy and economic success later in life.

In South Africa, as many as 70% of children don't have any children's books in their homes. The National Reading Survey (released in June 2023) found this lack of access to books to be a key contributor to low literacy levels across the country.

Book Dash is a not-for-profit publishing project to get more books into preschool children's hands and homes. Based on a large body of evidence, their vision is that "Every child should own a hundred books by the age of five" to help support crucial early development and get them ready for school before it's too late to catch up.

Book Dash and Discovery Vitality have a longstanding partnership, wherein every newborn Discovery Vitality baby registered on the Vitality baby 1000 Day Programme receives their very first book in their baby bag.

How can you help improve South Africa's literacy rates? From 10 August to 21 September 2023, you can donate your Discovery Miles to Book Dash through Vitality MoveToGive in the Discovery app to make sure all South African children own books.

Achieve your Vitality Active Rewards exercise, drive or spend goals to earn a play on your gameboard and reveal Discovery Miles.

You can then donate your Discovery Miles to Book Dash through Vitality MoveToGive in the Discovery app:

1. For 150 Discovery Miles, you can donate an African storybook to a very young child to put them on the path to academic and economic success.
2. For 750 Discovery Miles, you can contribute towards a book-making event where volunteer creatives make 10 new storybooks for children in 12 hours.
3. For 1,200 Discovery Miles, you can contribute towards translating an African storybook to give children under five own books in their home language.

How to donate to Book Dash through Vitality MoveToGive

1. Activate Vitality Active Rewards in the latest version of the Discovery app.
2. Achieve your exercise, drive or money goals to earn a play on the gameboard.
3. Pick a tile on the gameboard to reveal Discovery Miles.
4. Spend your Discovery Miles on Vitality MoveToGive charity donations.
