The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation, previously known as the Friends of Mosvold Trust, was established in 1995 to support the Mosvold Hospital's growth, health development and sustainability. This foundation specifically addresses the growing shortage of qualified healthcare professionals working in the rural areas of the Umkhanyakude district in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation's objectives are to address this shortage of healthcare professionals and identify and encourage rural youth who have the potential to become healthcare professionals. The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation funds these young peoples' healthcare studies in the form of scholarships, and the condition for these scholarships is once they graduate as qualified healthcare professionals, they must repay the foundation by returning to their communities to work as healthcare professionals for the equivalent number of years it too them to complete their studies.
