How Discovery Insure is revolutionising road safety with technology

Studies show that driving behaviour is a major factor in vehicle and overall road safety. That's why Discovery Insure uses intelligent technology to measure our clients' driving behaviour with award-winning telematic devices (according to Gartner).

WHAT IS TELEMATICS?

Telematics underpins our rewards-based Vitality Drive programme. This technology uses sensors that collect, transmit, and process information, like how you accelerate, how you hit the brakes, how tight your cornering is, whether you use your phone while driving, and if you stick to the speed limit. Using algorithms, we then translate this information into Vitality Drive points and a Vitality Drive status, which gives clients an easy way to understand how they drive - and how they can drive better.

HOW DOES THE VITALITY DRIVE SENSOR WORK?

With Vitality Drive, clients can choose between three telematics devices: the Vitality Drive Sensor, the Crowd Search Sensor (for stolen vehicle recovery), and the Standalone DQ-Track (if you don't have a compatible smartphone for the Vitality Drive Sensor or the Crowd Search Sensor).

The Vitality Drive Sensor makes monitoring how you drive simple, so you can improve your habits and earn more points for driving well. Used together with the Vitality Drive app it's a powerful tool that gives insights into driving behaviour.

The sensor is easy to install on the inside of a windscreen, which also means it can detect and log aspects of a trip without needing a smartphone inside the vehicle. The sensor provides detailed, real-time trip feedback shown on a map, so clients can see how well they drove during each trip and where they can improve.

The Vitality Drive Sensor also enables access to intelligent safety features like:

• Impact Alert - Impact Alert provides immediate response and medical care when your vehicle is involved in a severe accident, even if we can't get hold of you.
• Vehicle panic button - The vehicle panic button enables you to use your compatible smartphone as a panic button to request immediate assistance in the event of an emergency.
• Find my vehicle - Enables you can locate all the vehicles insured on your plan through your smartphone. The app will show the last location where the vehicle and smartphone were paired.
• Weather warnings - Using weather data combined with the telematics device's location data, we can send you warnings of imminent bad weather. For example, we can warn you of a large approaching hailstorm in your area, when it would be safer for your vehicles to be parked under a roof and not driving on the roads.
• Motion Alert - Motion Alert is an early-warning safety feature that identifies when your phone is not in the vehicle at the time the vehicle is moving, alerting you to possible theft of your vehicle.
