It's always good to put fire safety first. Here's why it's especially important in winter

Winter is here, and so is fire season. Fire safety is essential. But if there's a blaze, our Fire Force is ready to respond.

Did you know that a fire breaks out every six hours in Johannesburg? In winter, the risk of a fire happening increases as people try to keep warm and the air becomes drier. Here is some important information to help you make sure your home is safe, and how to contact the Fire Force.

Tips to make your home fire safe

Heat your home safely
Keep flammable items like clothes, curtains and tablecloths at least a metre away from any heat source, whether it's an electric or gas heater, or even a stove.

Check your appliances
From toasters to kettles, any appliance can be a fire hazard if it's faulty. Regularly check cords, wire connections and plugs for wear and tear. Make sure that you don't leave appliances on when you aren't using them.

Treat gas with respect
Make sure there is enough air flow when you're using gas and make sure your gas supply is properly turned off after use. Always store the cylinder upright and away from other combustible items. Look out for yellow or orange flames, black marks or window condensation - this mean you must get your gas cylinder checked immediately.

Know what to do
Keep a fire blanket and fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Never use water to put out fat and oil fires - instead, turn off the stove and cover the flame with a pot lid if possible. Make sure you know who to call in an emergency and keep spare keys accessible in case you need to unlock gates quickly.
