SpendTrend: Festive Season Edition 2024/25

Our latest analysis of client transaction data over the festive season has unveiled some interesting client preferences and trends, showcasing the value of Discovery's rewards and the healthy financial behaviours they drive. Here's what we found:

Key insights on spending over the 2024/25 holiday period and historic observations

• Making travel possible with our rewards: Flight prices on the most popular local routes increased by up to 16% and on popular international routes by up to 20% compared with the same period last year. However, Vitality continues to make travel affordable, with clients enjoying deep discounts with partner airlines and the option to pay using their Ðiscovery Miles.
• Exploring the world with Vitality Travel: Discovery Bank clients who booked through Vitality Travel could be found on more than 18,000 planes over the holiday period, visiting over 90 countries and collectively flying more than 320 million kilometres.
• Festive season spending peaks: Average client card spend was nearly 15% higher in December 2024 compared with the rest of the year, with increases seen on entertainment and retail spend (such as on eating out and takeout, groceries, alcohol, children's toys and clothes).
• Financial resilience: Throughout most of the year, 42% of our clients maintain a surplus from their monthly salaries, showcasing effective financial management. As expected, this figure declines in December (to 36%) due to festive spending, before recovering to close to standard levels in January - a good indication that clients are not overextending themselves and can quickly rebuild their finances .
