Plus, you automatically get travel insurance when you pay for your travels with your Discovery Bank card or Ðiscovery Miles.

Vitality Travel Rewards

What travel rewards can I get with Vitality Money?

With Vitality, which includes Vitality Money and Vitality Health, you can get discounts on local and international flights (on both the base fare and YQ tax), as well as on holiday accommodation and car hire. Your personalised discounts are based on your Discovery Bank product, Vitality Money status, Vitality Health checks (if applicable) and qualifying credit card spend.

With Vitality Money and Vitality Health you can get from:

  • 10% to 75% off local flights
  • 10% to 75% off international flights
  • 10% to 25% off holiday accommodation
  • 10% to 25% off car hire.

What Vitality Money rewards can I get on local flights?

With Vitality, you can get personalised flight discounts from 10% to 75% off local flights (base fare and YQ tax) with Airlink, CemAir, FlySafair, LIFT and South African Airways (partner airlines). Your personalised discount is based on your Discovery Bank product, Vitality Money status, Vitality Health checks (if applicable), and qualifying card spend. These upfront discounts apply to the cost of the flight when booking.

You can use your personalised Vitality Travel discount on six one-way (or 3 return) flights per calendar year. Thereafter, you will receive a flat rate of 10% off for the rest of the calendar year on local flights you book.

We apply a fair-usage spend limit of R7,500 per person for local flights, R25,000 per person for international flights for economy or premium economy bookings, and R75,000 per person for business class bookings. This limit applies to the discountable portion of the booking, including the base fare and YQ taxes.

What Vitality Money rewards can I get on international flights?

With Vitality Travel, you can get personalised flight discounts of 10% to 75% off international flight bookings (both the base fare and YQ tax) with Airlink, British Airways, CemAir, Emirates, FlySafair, Qantas and South African Airways, and United Airlines (excluding codeshare). Your personal discount is based on your Discovery Bank product, Vitality Money status, Vitality Health checks (if applicable) and qualifying credit card spend. These upfront discounts apply to the cost of the flight when booking.

You can use your personalised Vitality Travel discount on two return international or regional flights per calendar year. You will receive a flat rate of 10% for the rest of the calendar year on international or regional flights you book.

What is qualifying credit card spend with travel rewards?

For your travel benefits, we look at your average monthly qualifying card spend over the previous rolling 12 months at the time of booking. If you haven't had a Discovery Bank account for that long, we'll look at your average monthly qualifying card spend over the number of months you've already had your Discovery Bank account, with a minimum period required of three months.

If you upgraded to Discovery Bank from a Discovery Card that was first issued before the launch of Discovery Bank, we'll include your spend history before upgrading.

The Vitality Travel platform

What is Vitality Travel?

Discovery Bank brings you Vitality Travel, an integrated travel booking platform that allows you to make all your travel bookings, including flights, accommodation and car hire bookings, in one convenient place using your desktop computer. The booking platform integrates with your Vitality travel rewards to offer you unprecedented discounts on a wide range of flights, accommodation, car hire and exciting local and international travel experiences. You can also make local and international flight bookings in your Discovery Bank app.

Can I use Vitality Travel on my Discovery Bank app?

You can book flights in the Discovery Bank app. Easily select, filter and sort your search results by airline, cabin class, fare type, stops and times. Your flight discounts will be automatically applied, and you can pay with your Discovery Bank cards or Ðiscovery Miles or a combination of both.

Who can use Vitality Travel?

All Discovery Bank clients with Vitality Money can use the Vitality Travel platform to book flights, holiday accommodation and car hire. This includes all Discovery clients and Vitality Health members who have activated the Ðiscovery Account. To book flights in the Discovery Bank app, clients simply need to download the latest version of the Discovery Bank app.

Clients with only a savings account can upgrade to a qualifying product with Vitality Money to get access to the Vitality Travel platform.

I am not a Discovery Bank client, but I do have a Vitality Health membership. Can I book using the Vitality Travel booking platform?

If you're a Vitality Health member but you do not have a qualifying Discovery Bank product with Vitality Money, you'll need to sign up for a qualifying product with Vitality Money to get access to the Vitality Travel platform. Learn more about How to open a Ðiscovery Account with no monthly fees.

How do I use the Vitality Travel booking platform?

To use the Vitality Travel booking platform on a desktop, simply:

  1. Log in to Discovery Bank's online banking website at https://online.discovery.bank/ using your laptop or desktop.
  2. Log in with your Discovery login details.
  3. Log in to your banking app and follow the steps to complete the in-app authentication.
  4. Click on Travel at the top of the page or scroll down to your Travel rewards section and click on Book now.

To access flight bookings in the Discovery Bank app, simply:

  1. Log in to the Discovery Bank app.
  2. Tap Transact and select Travel.
  3. Tap Flights.
  4. Select your travel destination, dates and passengers.
    • You can filter and sort your search results by airline, cabin class, fare type, stops, and times.
How do I make a booking on the Vitality Travel booking platform?

To make a booking using the Vitality Travel booking platform on desktop, simply:

  1. Log in to the Vitality Travel booking platform on Discovery Bank's online banking website.
  2. Choose whether you want to start booking Flights, Accommodation or Car hire.
  3. Follow the simple steps to complete your booking.

What can I do in the app when I book flights?

When booking a flight in the Discovery Bank app, you can:

  • See all available local and international flights.
  • Search, filter and sort by airline, cabin class, fare type, stops and times.
  • See fares from partner airlines with your Vitality discounts automatically applied.
  • Pay for your flight booking with your Discovery Bank card or Discovery Miles, or a combination of both.
  • Enter or change the traveller identity information.
  • View and share your travel itineraries, which update automatically when necessary.
Which airlines can I book with Vitality Travel?

You can book discounted flights with the following local and international flight partners on the Vitality Travel booking platform and in your Discovery Bank app:

  • Airlink
  • British Airways
  • Cemair
  • Emirates
  • FlySafair
  • LIFT
  • South African Airways (SAA)
  • Qantas
  • United Airlines

You can also book flights with a range of non-partner airlines with Vitality Travel and in your Discovery Bank app, however no travel discounts will apply.

What travel discounts do I qualify for?

You can view your personalised travel discounts in the Discovery Bank app. Simply log in to your banking app and scroll down to the Travel rewards tile for all your current travel discounts.

Six one-way (or three return) local or regional flights per calendar year are subject to the personalised Vitality Health and Vitality Money discount. Thereafter, you will receive a flat rate of 10% off all flights booked on the Vitality Travel booking platform for the rest of the calendar year.

If you don't qualify for personalised travel discounts, or choose not to use your personalised travel discounts, you'll still qualify for a flat 10% saving when booking with local discount flight partners.

Who qualifies for Discovery Bank travel discounts?

To get local and regional flight discounts with Vitality Money, you must be a primary accountholder or secondary cardholder with any one of the below products:

  • A Discovery Bank Transaction Account with pay-as-you-transact fees
  • A Discovery Bank Transaction Account with bundled fees
  • A Discovery Bank Credit Card Account
  • A Discovery Bank Suite
  • A Ðiscovery Account.

Note: Vitality Health discounts and limits apply to the main member and all dependents listed in the Vitality Health membership. Vitality Money personalised discounts apply only to the primary accountholder, and secondary cardholders receive a flat 10% saving.

Can I use my Ðiscovery Miles to pay for my travel booking?

Discovery Bank clients with Vitality Money can use Ðiscovery Miles to pay for flights on the Vitality Travel booking platform when booking online and in the Discovery Bank app. Simply select Ðiscovery Miles as your payment method when checking out and enter the amount of available Ðiscovery Miles you'd like to spend.

Why am I charged a booking fee?

The booking fee is an administration fee that you have to pay for Vitality to manage and facilitate the booking. It includes support for any issues experienced for booking on the platform.

The variable booking fee applies to flights booked on the Vitality platform. This varies based on the time between the booking date and the date of travel.

The flight booking fee is charged on each ticket (which can consist of multiple sectors) booked, where adults and children are charged separately. The fee does not apply to tickets for children younger than two years at the time of travel.

How do I change or cancel my booking made through the Vitality Travel booking platform?

There is a service fee charge if you change your booking, and there may be a difference in the fare. You do not get a discount on the cost of changing your flights. Changes to your flight bookings need to be made directly with the partner airline you've booked with.

What are the local flight limits and usage?

Your Vitality Money and Vitality Health personalised discounts apply to six one-way (or three return) local flights booked and two one-way (or one return) regional or international flights booked in a calendar year. Local flights must be booked at least 7 days in advance to receive your discount. If you book within 7 days, the base 10% discount will be applied.

International and regional flights need to be booked at least six weeks in advance to be eligible to receive your discount. If you book within six weeks, the base 10% discount will be applied.

Once your flight allocation is depleted, or if you don't qualify for personalised discounts, you will receive a flat 10% discount on an unlimited number of flights. The flight discounts will apply to the base fare and YQ taxes where applicable.

What is Discovery Bank Priority Fast Track?

Discovery Bank Priority Fast Track is an exclusive benefit offering a dedicated fast lane for airport security screening. It allows qualifying Discovery Bank clients and other qualifying travellers to enjoy faster security clearance at OR Tambo International Airport and Cape Town International Airport.

Where can I find Discovery Bank Priority Fast Track lanes?

At OR Tambo International Airport, Priority Fast Track is available at:

  • Domestic departures security screening
  • International arrivals passport control

At Cape Town International Airport, Priority Fast Track is available at

Which Discovery Bank clients can use Priority Fast Track?

Discovery Bank primary accountholders and secondary cardholders with a Discovery Bank Purple card or Discovery Bank Black card can use Priority Fast Track.

Other than Discovery Bank clients, who else can use Priority Fast Track?

If you're not a qualifying Discovery Bank client, you can still use Priority Fast Track for domestic travel if you have a business-class or premium ticket. For international travel, you can access Priority Fast Track if you have a first-class, business-class or premium ticket, and the benefit is also available to diplomats or holders of special passports.

Can friends or family travelling with me also use Priority Fast Track?

Discovery Bank clients with a qualifying bank card, as well as priority passengers, may have a limited number of co-travellers or guests join them each time they use Priority Fast Track . The number of guests allowed depends on the card colour or ticket:

  • Discovery Bank Purple card: Five guests
  • Discovery Bank Black card: Three guests
  • Premium passenger: One guest
How do I use Discovery Bank Priority Fast Track?

If you're a qualifying Discovery Bank client:

For domestic departures at OR Tambo or Cape Town International Airports, simply check in as usual, then proceed to the security screening area and follow the signage for the Discovery Bank Priority Fast Track lane. Then, present your physical or virtual Discovery Bank Black or Purple card along with your boarding pass to gain access.

For international arrivals at OR Tambo International Airport, simply proceed to passport control. Then, present your physical or virtual Discovery Bank Black or Purple card along with your boarding pass to gain access.

If you're a priority passenger:

You can use the Priority Fast Track queue by presenting your physical or electronic boarding pass.


The Lounge

What is The Lounge?

The Lounge by Discovery Bank - in partnership with South African Airways (SAA) - is the name of the pre-flight lounge experience that Discovery Bank Purple, Black, Platinum and Gold clients can enjoy at various airports across South Africa.

At which airports can I access The Lounge?

The new luxury lounges are now available at:

  • Cape Town International Airport: Domestic departures
  • OR Tambo International Airport: Domestic departures
  • OR Tambo International Airport: International departures
  • King Shaka International Airport: Domestic departures
  • Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport: Domestic departures

Who can access The Lounge?

Discovery Bank clients with a qualifying product, as well as their secondary cardholders, can use The Lounge. Qualifying Discovery Bank products that will give you access to The Lounge are:

How does The Lounge benefit work?

Qualifying Discovery Bank clients get a set number of complimentary visits to The Lounge facilities every year. You get a set number of complimentary visits to domestic lounges and a set number of visits to international lounges every year, based on your Discovery Bank product and engagement level.

If all your complimentary visits have been used, or you choose to not use a complimentary visit, you can still access the lounges at R300 per person, which will be deducted from your selected Discovery Bank card.

Note that you must have a qualifying monthly spend of R3,000 or more in the previous month to access The Lounge in the current month.

How many complimentary visits to The Lounge do I qualify for?

The number of complimentary visits you get will depend on your Discovery Bank product and your engagement level:

*Clients with an average monthly spend of at least R22,500 per month, effective 1 January 2025, will receive the full allocation, otherwise clients will receive complimentary access for 2 local visits and 1 international visit. Children aged 12 years or younger can enter for free and will not count towards the complimentary visits.

Clients with a qualifying Discovery Bank Gold card can enter The Lounge at a fee per person.

Can my secondary cardholder use my lounge benefit?

Your secondary cardholder can access The Lounge using your benefit but will share your number of complimentary visits per year. If they choose not to use your complimentary visits, they can still access the lounges at R300 per person, which we will deduct from your selected Discovery Bank card. Your secondary cardholders can generate vouchers to enter The Lounge using their own Discovery Bank app.

Do I have to be with my secondary cardholder for them to use my benefit at The Lounge?

Discovery Bank secondary cardholders don't have to be with the Discovery Bank primary accountholder to use this benefit, as long as they are 18 years or older.

Can I take guests into The Lounge?

The following guests may accompany you (or your secondary cardholder who is 18 years or older) into The Lounge using your lounge benefit:

  • Your secondary cardholder(s)
  • Children younger than 18 years old
  • Guests who are 18 years or older.

Remember, if you choose to use your complimentary visits for your guests, this will be deducted from your annual number of complimentary visits. If you choose to not use your complimentary visit, you can bring guests to The Lounge at R300 per guest, which we will deduct from your selected Discovery Bank card.

You and up to four others (including children or guests) may enter The Lounge using a single voucher.

Can I still access The Lounge if I have used up my complimentary visits for the year?

If all your complimentary visits have been used, or you choose to not use a complimentary visit, you can still access the lounges at R300 per person, which will be deducted from your selected Discovery Bank card.

How do I get a voucher to enter The Lounge?

If you're a qualifying Discovery Bank primary accountholder, or secondary cardholder, you can simply generate a voucher on your Discovery Bank app and show it to the receptionist at The Lounge entrance, along with your boarding pass with a travel date matching the date of the lounge visit.

To generate a voucher, simply:

  1. Log in to the Discovery Bank app.
  2. Tap Transact and select Lounge.
  3. Tap Generate voucher
  4. Select the airport lounge you want to visit.
  5. Enter the number of guests aged 13 years or older accessing The Lounge (including yourself) and whether you want to use your complimentary visits or pay for the visit.
  6. Enter the number of guests aged between 2 years and 12 years accessing The Lounge and whether you want to use your complimentary visits or pay for the visit.

Remember, once your voucher has been scanned at The Lounge, you won't be able to cancel the voucher and you won't be able to get a refund. Secondary cardholders need to download the Discovery Bank app and generate their own vouchers on their app - vouchers for secondary cardholders cannot be generated by the primary accountholder.

Is there any reason why my guests and I would be refused entry into The Lounge?

You or your guests could be stopped from entering The Lounge if:

  • The Lounge is at capacity. Entry to the lounge is subject to availability, according to capacity and safety rules.
  • There is an emergency. For example, an evacuation, flooding, gas leak and so on.
  • You, your secondary cardholder or your guest is intoxicated, uses abusive language or is displaying generally inappropriate conduct.
  • You don't have a valid boarding pass with a travel date matching the date of the lounge visit.
  • Your secondary cardholder or guest is younger than 18 years old. Secondary cardholders and guests under the age of 18 can only access The Lounge if they are accompanied by an adult who is 18 years or older.
Why has my lounge access been terminated?

Your benefit and access to The Lounge will be stopped if:

  • You've downgraded or closed your qualifying Discovery Bank account.
  • You're not up to date on your Discovery Bank fees.
  • Your qualifying spend was less than R3,000 in the previous month.
  • Your account is not in good standing.
  • Your account is not in good standing.
    • 'Good standing' means that none of your accounts and credit facilities are overdrawn, in arrears, in default, or subject to any legal process with Discovery Bank, including keeping the Know Your Customer and anti-money laundering information up to date.
    • 'Legal process' excludes debt review as defined in the National Credit Act 34 of 2005.
Can my benefit and access to The Lounge be reinstated?

Once the cause of the cancellation has been rectified, your lounge benefit and access to The Lounge will be reinstated.

Does The Lounge benefit replace my lounge access through DragonPass?

Access to The Lounge by Discovery Bank - in partnership with South African Airways (SAA) - operates independently of the lounge access qualifying clients can enjoy through DragonPass.

Before you travel internationally

Do I have to activate my Discovery Bank card for international use?

No, your Discovery Bank card is already preauthorised for international use so you don't have to activate it to work overseas.

Must I let Discovery Bank know if I'm travelling abroad?

No, there is no need for you to let us know if you're travelling outside of South Africa. All Discovery Bank cards are preauthorised for international use and you don't need to do anything in order to use it abroad.

How do I get a Confirmation of Funds letter from Discovery Bank?

You can request a Confirmation of Funds letter by simply calling Discovery Bank on 0800 07 96 97.

Remember to have the following information on hand when you call:

  • The embassy or consulate's name and address.
  • Your full name and passport number.
  • The account details you want us to display on the letter.

Banking while travelling internationally

Can I load foreign currency on my Discovery Bank card?

No, your Discovery Bank card is not a currency card, so you can't add a different currency to it. However, you can pay for transactions by swiping your card while travelling abroad, as well as withdraw foreign currency in cash from most Visa ATMs worldwide.

Can I use my Discovery Bank card at ATMs abroad, and what does it cost?

Yes, you can withdraw local currency from Visa ATMs worldwide. The set Discovery Bank fee for international withdrawals is R80 for each withdrawal. The Discovery Bank Black and Purple Suites and Discovery Bank Black Transaction Account (bundled fee) offer unlimited free withdrawals worldwide.

Remember that certain international ATMs might charge an additional fee when you withdraw cash. Make sure that you check the ATM for this information before you use it. The exchange rate at the time applies, and we charge you a standard currency conversion fee of 2.75%. Check the Banking fees guide for more information on fees for international withdrawals.

What does it cost to swipe my Discovery Bank card when travelling abroad?

International point-of-sale swipes are free for all cardholders, but we charge you a standard currency conversion fee of 3%. Please note that there is a fee for international cash withdrawals.

Who do I contact if there are fraudulent transactions on my card while travelling abroad?

To report fraud on your Discovery Bank card, you can contact Discovery Bank on +27 11 324 4444. This number has a 24/7 service.

Can I access the Discovery Bank app while travelling abroad?

Yes, you can access the Discovery Bank app while travelling abroad, as long as you have an active internet connection. This means that you can manage your banking no matter where you are in the world. Please review the list of countries where economic sanctions are imposed from a VISA perspective.

Can I receive OTP notifications while travelling abroad?

Yes, you can receive OTP notifications through SMS while travelling abroad as long as you have activated SMS roaming with your cellular provider.

Does it use data when I access the Discovery Bank app abroad?

Yes, accessing your Discovery Bank app while abroad will use the same amount of data as back home in South Africa. Make sure you have international roaming activated or connect to a trusted Wi-Fi connection to access the app.

Note: Make sure that you are aware of roaming data costs since it can differ in countries.

Do I have access to travel lounges overseas with my Discovery Bank card?

Clients with Discovery Bank Gold or Platinum cards do not qualify for complimentary visits to overseas travel lounges.

Clients with a Discovery Bank Black card receive six complimentary visits a year and one free guest for each visit through DragonPass to over 1 200 airport lounges worldwide. To enter the lounge and to see which lounges are available, please make sure you have downloaded and logged in to the Visa Airport Companion (VAC) app.

Clients with a Discovery Bank Purple card have unlimited access for themselves and one free guest for each visit to DragonPass partner travel lounges. To enter the lounge and to see which lounges are available, please make sure you have downloaded and logged in to the VAC app.

Do I earn base Ðiscovery Miles when I use my Discovery Bank credit card while travelling abroad?

Yes, clients with a qualifying Discovery Bank Account can earn base Ðiscovery Miles in line with the normal base earn rate and monthly threshold on all qualifying transactions with their virtual card.

 

Transactions that do not qualify for earning base Ðiscovery Miles are:

  • Cash withdrawals   
  • Electronic fund transfers (EFTs)   
  • Budget facility transfers (including the iPhone benefit)   
  • Gambling transactions   
  • Monthly Discovery Bank and Vitality Money fees   
  • Debit orders   
  • Transactions made with a Discovery Bank debit card
  • Transactions on your transaction account, including your debit card spend if you have a Discovery Bank Credit Card or Suite.

Please note:

  • Spend will be calculated using the daily exchange rates.

Travel insurance with Discovery Bank cards

Do I get travel insurance with my Discovery Bank card?

Discovery Bank clients qualify for free international travel insurance provided by Discovery Travel Insurance underwritten by Discovery Insure Ltd if you pay for:

  • The full cost of your international travel ticket (flight or cruise) with your Discovery Bank credit, debit or virtual card, or a previous Discovery Card from before we launched the bank.
  • Part or all of the ticket with your Ðiscovery Miles.

Please note:

  • Your account must be in good standing, meaning:
    • No arrears on your credit account
    • No missed payments
    • FICA (Financial Intelligence Centre Act) documents in order.
  • Your international flight must leave South Africa.
  • You are covered for 90 days or until you return to South Africa - whatever comes first.
  • You don't qualify for free travel insurance if you pay for your ticket with an electronic funds transfer.
Do I get travel insurance if I pay for only part of the ticket with my Discovery Bank card or previous Discovery Card, or my Ðiscovery Miles?

You'll get the full free travel insurance when you use your credit, debit or virtual card to pay for the full cost of the ticket, or when you use your Ðiscovery Miles to pay for the whole or part of the ticket.

How do I activate travel insurance on my Discovery Bank card or previous Discovery Card?

If you've paid for an international travel ticket with your Discovery Bank credit, debit or virtual card, Discovery Travel Insurance will automatically email your travel certificate to you.

Contact Discovery Travel Insurance for your proof of cover if you've used your Ðiscovery Miles to pay the whole or part of the cost of an international travel ticket.

Am I covered by Discovery Travel Insurance when travelling to conflict zones?

Discovery Travel Insurance doesn't provide international cover if you're travelling to a known war zone or a country actively participating in war. If you're unsure about cover while travelling, please call us on 0860 878 233. Please make sure to manage your plan and declare your destinations online.

What does Discovery Travel Insurance cover in a medical emergency?

If you're not covered by Discovery Health Medical Scheme, our travel insurance covers you for emergency medical and non-medical costs outside the borders of South Africa. This applies for 90 days from your date of departure from South Africa.

If you're a Discovery Health Medical Scheme member, the international travel benefit covers you for emergency medical costs outside the borders of South Africa. This applies for 90 days from your date of departure from South Africa.

The cover ends when you return to South Africa or 90 days after you left South Africa, whichever happens first.

Who qualifies for the Visa travel insurance benefit with Discovery Bank?

Clients with a Discovery Bank Black card qualify for the Visa Signature travel benefits and clients with a Discovery Bank Purple card qualify for the Visa Infinite travel insurance benefits for tickets bought before 1 May 2024. From 1 May, Discovery Bank Black and Purple cardholders qualify for travel insurance through Discovery Travel Insurance, underwritten by Discovery Insure Ltd.

The travel insurance will automatically apply when you buy a flight ticket or cruise ticket with your Discovery Bank credit, debit or virtual card. However, the trip must leave from and return to South Africa to qualify for the travel insurance.

How do I claim my Visa travel benefits?

If you bought your travel ticket before 1 May 2024 with your Black or Purple card and have a medical emergency, you can call Visa directly on:

Include the following information in your claims email:

  • Your full name
  • The first nine digits of your card
  • Your address
  • Details on what you're claiming for.

You will receive a claim form. This form must be returned within 90 days to creditcardclaims@broadspire.eu along with the relevant supporting documents.
